Erdogan states Israel wants any excuse to violate truce

(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Israel on Saturday of breaching the Gaza ceasefire using “made-up” excuses, according to reports.

Speaking at the Science Dissemination Awards ceremony in Istanbul, Erdogan noted that Hamas continues to exercise restraint in order to maintain the truce despite ongoing provocations. He criticized international media for failing to report on the deaths of their colleagues in Gaza, adding that “over 270 journalists were killed in Gaza.”

The Turkish president highlighted the broader human toll, stating that more than 13,500 students, 830 teachers and educational staff, and 193 scientists and academics have been killed by Israeli forces. He emphasized, “More than 785,000 students have been deprived of their right to education... What is happening is a deliberate, intentional, and planned policy of mass killing.”

Erdogan reaffirmed Ankara’s commitment to raising these issues internationally, mentioning that he had addressed them during discussions in South Africa last week as part of the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

Since October 2023, Israeli attacks in Gaza have reportedly killed nearly 70,000 people, mostly women and children, and injured more than 170,000 others.

On the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, Erdogan extended greetings to Palestinians and emphasized Türkiye’s efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza as winter approaches. He reiterated that Ankara is working to maintain the ceasefire and provide assistance in pursuit of a just and lasting peace.
